In recent years, hiking in Puerto Vallarta has become increasingly popular, as it offers excellent health benefits and provides the perfect opportunity to explore the city and its surroundings (including the Riviera Nayarit). Below are some of the best hikes in Puerto Vallarta that you shouldn’t miss!
Urban Hike: Mirador La Cruz

Starting right from the Malecón, this is one of the best and easiest hikes to reach in Puerto Vallarta. Begin at the intersection of the Malecón and Abasolo Street, and follow Abasolo uphill. As the road becomes steeper, turn left onto Calle Emilio Carranza, and then take the first right onto Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez. It’s very easy to find, so don’t worry about getting lost.
Follow the signs, and you’ll eventually reach the white stairs leading to the best viewpoint in Puerto Vallarta. As you climb, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Banderas Bay, the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains, and the rustic rooftops of downtown. The 360-degree panoramic view makes this hike one of the most popular in Puerto Vallarta.
Garden Hike: Vallarta Botanical Gardens

A must for nature lovers, the Vallarta Botanical Gardens are located about 30 minutes south of downtown Puerto Vallarta, and they’re absolutely worth the trip. In 2022, the gardens received the Excellence Award from the American Public Garden Association.
Hidden in the Sierra Madre foothills, this stunning ecological park features multiple trails and winding mountain paths showcasing orchids, butterflies, and hummingbirds across 79 acres. Visitors receive a trail map upon paying the entrance fee.
We explored all the trails in one afternoon, and while they’re all wonderful, our favorite was the Jaguar Trail, which leads to a small river beach where you can take a refreshing swim.
Beach Hike: Playa Las Ánimas

One of the most popular hikes near Puerto Vallarta runs from Boca de Tomatlán to Playa Las Ánimas. While guided hiking tours are available, you can easily catch a local bus from downtown heading south to the fishing village of Boca de Tomatlán, where the adventure begins.
This half-day coastal hike takes you along scenic beaches and jungle paths on the southern coast of Banderas Bay. You’ll wind through lush tropical forests, pass secluded coves, and cross charming beaches where you can stop for a quick swim.
When you finally reach Playa Las Ánimas, reward yourself with a cold beer and fresh seafood at one of the beachfront restaurants before taking a water taxi back to Boca de Tomatlán.
Jungle Hike: Monkey Mountain

Also known as the Cerro del Mono, this trail is a bit off the beaten path. To get there, you’ll pass through Punta Mita and head toward Litibu Beach. You can join a guided tour or go on your own up to the summit of Monkey Mountain, which offers an incredible 360° panoramic view of the coastline and the surrounding jungle.
The hike takes about 1.5 hours each way, so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
Viewpoint Hike: Mirador El Toro

This hike begins at the western end of the beach in Los Ayala and ends at El Toro Viewpoint, a cliffside lookout with one of the best views of the Riviera Nayarit.
Toward the end of the trail, you’ll reach a fork with a sign pointing either to the viewpoint or to Playa del Toro. We recommend heading to the viewpoint first for the stunning ocean views, then descending to the beach for a relaxing swim.
